What does a gas thermocouple do?
A universal thermocouple is a safety device that’s used to detect whether or not your range’s pilot light is lit. It contains a metal rod that is placed very close to your pilot light’s flame. This rod is connected to your range’s gas valve. When your pilot light is lit, the heat from the flame sends a voltage through the thermocouple that keeps the gas line open. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple will lose its voltage and the gas line to your furnace will be closed.
Is this easy to fit?
This part can only be fitted by a gas safe registered engineer. It should not be attempted by anyone who is not qualified.
My pilot light keeps going out, is this a fault of the thermocouple?
Normally when the pilot light doesn’t stay lit it is a good sign that the thermocouple is faulty. It could also mean that the pilot assembly needs cleaning out and the range is due for a service. A service should be carried out on a range every twelve months.
