As soon as your peeler starts to show any sign of metal showing through the grit. it is a sign that you need to take some remedial action to correct this. Once metal is showing it can start to wear through and create a hole in the plate or the barrel. If this happens the holes spinning at speed will damage the potatoes and take chunks out of them. In turn this will give poor shape potatoes and chips. It will send these large chunks of potato down the drain. Possibly leading it to block. Do not let this happen to you. It means you are literally sending your profits down the drain.
Even before the metal starts to show your machine may be in need of a re-grit. Ideally the potatoes should only need to be in the peeler for around two minutes. If yours is taking much longer than this it will probably need relining sooner rather than later. The longer the potatoes are in the machine it is using more electric, water and your time.
Can you give me any tips to use the reline kit?
Yes, make sure whatever you are relining is fully dry otherwise the adhesive mix will not bond with the existing. You can use a heat gun, blow torch or even hairdryer to achieve this.
Another thing you can do to assist drying is to use a similar heat source. Just keep the heat moving over the relined area, do not hold it on one spot.
Also remove any loose or existing grit that looks like it is lifting.
